Benamira is a small village located in the county of Soria, an autonomous region of Castilla y Leon, in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula. It lies 1093 meters above sea level, at the base of Sierra Ministra, the link between Sistema Central and Sistema Iberico.
Monteagudillo, an isolated hill 1188 meters high, is situated in the townland of Benamira. Fuente Vieja can be found just at the base of Monteagudillo. Fuente Vieja is the source of the Jalon river, one of the Ebro’s most important tributaries. The entire region “Comarca del alto Jalon” is named after this river that flows through it.
The townland of Benamira covers an area of 28900 hectares, and has a border 27.4 kilometers long.
Among the localities fauna are roe deer’s, wild boars, badgers, foxes, common shrews, partridges, turtledoves, skylarks, cranes and more can be found in the surrounding areas.
The main vegetation consists of dwarf oak and kermes oak, which provide shelter for the above mentioned wild boars, roe deer’s and foxes.
There are actually 10 people registered in the electoral roll of Benamira. It comes under the authority of the government of Medinaceli, a village situated 9 kilometers away. However during the summer, weekends, Easter and local holidays, the population increases notably.
The name of Benamira, is most likely of Arabic origin, and means “Emir’s Daughter”.
